A teenager from Australia has appeared in court after reportedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by applying plastic eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, appeared remotely at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in the state of South Australia on Tuesday, facing with a single charge of property damage.

In a statement at the moment of the September incident, the local council explained that surveillance video showed a individual placing artificial eyes on the artwork, which locals have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and informed the court she was unwell, as reported by media sources, with the judge advising her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in December.

The following day the reported event, the local mayor said that repairs to the much-loved community sculpture would be expensive as the stickers were impossible to be removed without harming the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in mid-September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those members of our society who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”

The mayor added the local government would pursue the “significant” repair costs from those responsible for the vandalism.

When the sculpture was first proposed, it drew varied responses from the area residents due to its price tag and design.

Costing A$136,000 ($89,000; £68,000), the sculpture depicts a mythical megafauna, with the sculpture’s designers inspired by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater found in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
