UK, UN and EU Denounce a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Pro-Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai’s 20-Year Prison Term.

The court decision of media publisher , a UK passport holder Jimmy Lai to a lengthy prison term in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Advocacy bodies and international powers have called the security-related charges driven by politics.

International Outcry and Demands for Freedom

Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper stated that the two-decade sentence is effectively a life sentence for the 78-year-old. She characterized the trial as being driven by political motives pursuant to legislation aimed at quieting Beijing's detractors. The Foreign Secretary demanded Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and release him to his family.

“This outcome highlights how the imprecise and extensive clauses of Hong Kong’s legal framework may be enforced in contravention of international human rights obligations,” said top UN human rights official Volker Türk.

A representative for the European Union, Anitta Hipper, said the bloc “deplores” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and demanded his swift liberation without preconditions.

Context of the Prosecution

Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was detained following the introduction of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was passed by China's government following extended demonstrations backed by Lai's media outlet.

He was ultimately convicted on allegations encompassing plotting to create inflammatory publications and colluding with overseas entities. The second set of accusations were pursuant to the disputed legislation.

A Son’s Anguish

His son, Sebastien Lai, shared that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation separated from his loved ones. His international counsel has called him the “world’s highest profile detainee” in custody today.

Sebastien Lai commented that while the sentence was expected, its confirmation was more painful than imagined, yet it provided some “respite” that the court process had concluded.

Political Repercussions

The sentencing has complicated the bilateral relationship. British leader Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case in talks with China's leader Xi Jinping earlier this year. However, any potential progress in securing his freedom is uncertain.

Sebastien Lai questioned the value of a visa-free travel agreement announced recently, stating it felt “somewhat insensitive.”

Authorities' Statements

In contrast, the officials from China welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s top official John Lee said the sentence manifested that “law and order is maintained.”

A spokesperson for China’s external affairs office, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “mastermind” behind previous protests and stated the legal case had been “justified and legal.” He advised international actors to refrain from intervention in the nation's domestic matters.

A Symbolic Case

Press rights groups called Lai as a symbol of eroding press liberties in Hong Kong. Their director general said it was a “somber occasion for those who value a independent media.”

Given an almost 100% conviction rate for charges under the security law, Lai’s harsh punishment is regarded as the strictest yet delivered under the disputed law.
