The Battle Royale's Specialized Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible During This Update

The game developers have an exciting surprise in store for the popular battle royale gamers, arriving just in time for festive season. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's super-slick traversal will be pleased to discover that a new movement mechanic is being implemented when Season 27: Amped launches on Nov. 4.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability gives players a burst of propulsion when scaling ledges and walls. According to key developer the design lead, this technique was previously existed of the game for quite a while, often called as "mantle jumping." But it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and is mainly used by competitive players in competitive play or esports competitions. In this update, Respawn is making it easier for players of all skill levels to successfully perform these advanced speed-boosts.

"This technique existed in Apex for some time, but the movement isn't easy to perform and a player might not realize it's possible without external guides," Canavese explains. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can easily see the timing to activate the high-octane movement ability, making accessible the mechanic and introducing new ways to compete for a much wider base."

Why Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

What's the reason for making a once niche technique available to all players? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan explains developers aims for gamers to experience empowerment — including ones who are new.

"Our community is doing advanced techniques like super-glides and tap-strafes, and we looked around at other games, looked at what our players are doing, and we wondered, 'What if we provide these capabilities to more players?'" the designer clarifies. "Because right now, some of these techniques are kind of janky to access — it requires to remap your keybinds and execute within one-frame windows. So we said, 'What if we create a polished version?'"

Season 27 Movement Focus

Mobility is largely the central theme in this season, with Legends Horizon, the defensive specialist, and the aerial combatant all getting enhancements to help keep them mobile. Recovery time on her tactical ability is shorter, and the Gravity Lift will propel users into the air much quicker than before. Her defensive walls feature a roof and the ability to grant speed boosts to those nearby. However the spotlight is on aerial Valkyrie receiving the most attention now, with multiple tweaks applied to enhance her as more potent, quicker, and deadlier.

"In my opinion there's quite a consensus that her moment is here," states character developer Ian Holstead. "There's no doubt she was dominant in the past, but due to the addition of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and Evac Towers, it seemed like she fell behind in today's the game. It was an ideal chance for us to revisit multiple elements in her abilities and sort of restore her to her glory days."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in the game's meta, the developer says the team assessed each of her abilities and implemented significant changes. Her jetpack received improvements, increasing velocity while airborne, and the jets themselves now recharge three times faster, allowing the player to spend more time aloft. She can no longer be harmed from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to mark opponents who are hit from it. Her Skyward Dive skill — which lifts teammates into the air for repositioning or escape — requires reduced delay to activate. Additionally, she gains some new perk choices that users can choose to conserve resources, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or further speed up her ultimate activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," he comments.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the lone airborne map, this location, is getting a movement-friendly overhaul, with major changes that expands bottlenecks and renders securing elevated positions more manageable. Respawn says Apex Legends this update focuses on providing gamers the tools they need to compete in the competition.

"Really, we were looking at Apex's core identity as a movement shooter," explains lead Legend designer Josh Mohan.

Apex Legends Season 27: Amped releases November 4th at the specified times.
