Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others got wounded in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and a third person who ran away after the incident was found not long after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location revealed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the past.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the residence was facing an eviction order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member triggered the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the interior minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

He thought the detonation had happened on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told local news, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had died in the performance of their duties.
