A significant industrial complex located in the suburbs of Jakarta is dealing with radioactive contamination after a government taskforce found traces of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two production facilities within the area, which includes businesses that export chilled seafood.

Urgent Response and Goods Withdrawal

This discovery has triggered immediate cleanup operations and the relocation of nearby inhabitants, coming after a similar pollution scare in the United States that was linked to the Indonesian facilities.

A major international store chain is among the companies that have withdrawn items from its shelves after the discovery.

Investigation and Detection of Pollution

Indonesian authorities launched an inquiry when the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a shipment of frozen breaded prawns sent by an Indonesian company.

Officials released an advisory instructing distributors and sellers to discard the goods and not sell it, even though the detected level was well under the authority's action limit. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an immediate hazard to consumers.

The FDA explained: “The primary impact on health of concern after extended, ongoing low dose contact (eg through consumption of contaminated food or liquid over a period) is an elevated risk of the disease, resulting from harm to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Medical Checks

Radiation scans revealed at least twenty-two factories in the manufacturing zone were contaminated. The official taskforce did not identify the 21 additional production facilities, but confirmed they would immediately receive cleanup procedures carried out by the country's atomic energy agency.

The environment minister declared that residents living in strongly contaminated areas would be moved until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.

Health authorities additionally performed checks on nearby employees and people living near the industrial zone, finding nine people who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. They were referred to a hospital before being allowed to go back.

Cleanup and Containment Plans

The affected sites will right away undergo decontamination procedures by Indonesia's nuclear institute. Authorities have further designated the site of a scrap metal factory as an containment facility for contaminated goods.

The country, which has no atomic power plants or arms programme, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from abroad.

Origin of Pollution and Import Limits

An official spokesperson told the media that recycled metal imports were the probable cause of contamination and confirmed the authorities would immediately enforce limits on metal waste arrivals. It was stated that vehicles were also being inspected for potential contamination as they moved through the region.

Regarding Caesium-137 and Health Risks

Caesium-137 is a hazardous radioactive element that typically appears in the ecosystem as a consequence of nuclear experiments or accidents, such as Fukushima or Chernobyl. Small amounts are found in soil, food and the atmosphere.

The amount detected in the chilled shrimp was much less than FDA intervention levels, but the authority stated long-term exposure to including small amounts of the element was associated to an elevated risk of the disease.

Withdrawal Details

The recalled shrimp was sold at major store locations across at least a dozen US states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
