Ayoub El Kaabi's Stunning Goal Secures Morocco's Victory Against Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations Opener.

The the Moroccan side shook off a nervy start to defeat their island opponents in the tournament's inaugural fixture on Sunday, thanks to the Real Madrid attacker and substitute El Kaabi in the second half.

It was a far from convincing showing, though, from the strongly favored hosts, who are ranked 97 places above the small island nation in the world rankings and had to grind out for the points in rainy conditions at Rabat's national stadium.

Nervy Start and Spurned Opportunities

Morocco failed to convert an early penalty and were goalless at half-time even with dominating the ball, finally breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute of the second half.

The goal arrived after Noussair Mazraoui did well to keep the ball in play before slipping it across for Brahim Díaz to calmly pass home.

Every opening game is never easy but we improved in the second half,” said manager Walid Regragui.

El Kaabi's Piece of Brilliance

The tension was subsequently eased by a piece of sheer individual brilliance from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only 10 minutes following coming on, the striker met a cross with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, doubling and sealing the win.

Before that, the Moroccan team might have taken ahead in the 11th minute when a spot-kick was given for a challenge on Díaz. Yet, Rahimi's effort was kept out by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.

Comoros Resistance and Second-Half Chance

Comoros stoutly defended against their more illustrious opponents at bay until the Moroccans' individual talent eventually told.

Goalkeeper Yannick Pandor pulled off several further good stops to keep down the scoreline as the game progressed, although his team did have a chance for an equalizer shortly following the first goal, with Rafiki Saïd firing directly into keeper Bounou.

Injury Worry for Hosts

The three points was partially marred by an apparent injury to the captain, Romain Saïss, who was forced off after the 18th minute apparently in tears.

This centre-back had only made his comeback to the national side last month following a lengthy absence due to ankle surgery.

The win continues Morocco's record-breaking run of consecutive wins to 19, beating the old record of 15 set by the Spanish national team between 2008 and 2009.
